michael macaluso, Principal

Mr. Macaluso is a Founder and Principal of Global Access CSG, an independent global operating partner, strategic advisor and private direct investor. In addition, he is responsible for managing the firm’s legal work. For more than two decades he has managed and successfully completed many billions of dollars in cross-border, in country, transactions, projects, investments and ventures in many parts of the world, including in the U.S., Greater China, Asia-Pacific generally, parts of the Middle East and Europe. Previously, as a practice leader and partner with global law firms, he pioneered the business model at the heart of Global Access morphing his practice into an increasingly business advisory platform that served the growing demand of global business, for companies like GMAC, Cargill, HSBC and leading medical and healthcare institutions among others, and also a growing number of private equity oriented firms making foreign direct investments, acquisitions and joint ventures. For more than a decade, Mr. Macaluso was a senior member of the global treasury team of a $120 billion company with activities across three continents. During the financial crisis, he led teams restructuring or working out over $150 billion of liquidity for some of the world’s leading institutions. Mr. Macaluso received his JD and MBA from the University of Chicago and his BA from Lehigh University.
 

Greggory Haugen, principal and chief Investment officer, Minneapolis

Mr. Haugen has been an active investor for 28 years, leading teams investing over $5 billion in various companies and portfolios of distressed consumer, real estate and residential assets in the U.S. and internationally. Mr. Haugen was a founding senior partner of CarVal Investors, a Value Fund with more than $10 billion in assets under management when he left in 2008. Since that time, Mr. Haugen has been an Angel Investor, primarily in the technology and financial sectors, and has served on numerous Boards of Directors. In those capacities, he has developed strong leadership, partnering, analytical and execution skills. He was also a CPA with KPMG in Minneapolis from 1985 to 1989. Mr. Haugen received a Masters of Management from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Boston University.

SHARON EPHRAIM, MANAGING DIRECTOR AND CHIEF Operating OFFICER, CHICAGO

Sharon Ephraim joined Global Access CSG in January 2018 as a Managing Director, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Compliance Officer. Most recently, Ms. Ephraim served as Chief Financial Officer and Chief Compliance Officer for Svoboda Capital Partners, a Chicago-based private equity firm, where she implemented its initial registered investment advisor compliance program. For the almost 10 years prior, she held positions as a Principal at Ares Management, a publicly-traded global asset management firm, and as Treasurer and Senior Director at Wrightwood Capital, LLC, a privately-held predecessor company of Ares in the commercial real estate specialty finance space. Prior to Ares, Ms. Ephraim served as Treasurer and Assistant Vice President for Wheels, Inc., a privately-held fleet leasing firm. She was also a banker at Bank of America (f/k/a Continental Bank) where she held various positions in the Securitized Products Group and the leasing and finance company lending division. Ms. Ephraim  received her BA in economics from Connecticut College and her MBA from The University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

JASON KRAVITT, SENIOR ADVISOR, HONOLULU

Mr. Kravitt is the founder of Mayer Brown LLP's securitization practice and is a former Co-Chair of the firm. He helped create some of the most significant products used in the capital markets today and is well known for leading industry groups in connection with new legislation or regulation. He is recognized as "a quarter back figure who is an incredible legal strategist and a fantastic leader" by Chambers USA. Mr. Kravitt was chosen by the Financial Times as one of the 10 most innovative lawyers in America and was inducted by Legal 500 into its inaugural Hall of Fame. He is also (i) the Chairman of the Cameron Kravitt Foundation, which funds programs at teaching hospitals such as the Johns Hopkins Children's Center, Weill Cornell Medical Center, University of California at San Francisco Benioff Children's Hospital, the University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital, and Addenbrooke's Hospital at Cambridge University, England, to teach residents how to help families who have had children die deal with their grief and (ii) was a member of the Board of Directors of the SFIG Charitable Foundation, which helps children of at risk families obtain counseling, mentors, education and post education career opportunities. As well, Mr. Kravitt taught the business or the law of Securitization as an adjunct Professor of Law at Northwestern Law School, NYU Law School, University of Hawaii Law School, and Kellogg at Northwestern. He currently serves as a board member and treasurer of the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Kravitt received his AB, Phi Beta Kappa, from Johns Hopkins University, his JD cum laude from Harvard Law School, and a Dipl. Comp. Law from Cambridge University.

JACK CAHILL, Senior Advisor, Minneapolis

Jack Cahill, Senior Advisor, is a JD, CPA with over 30 years of broad financial services tax experience focusing on Hedge and PE Funds in the Credit, Real Estate, Oil and Gas, Sustainable Agriculture and Transportation asset classes; as well as with banking and regulated investment vehicles. 

Mr. Cahill has significant in-house industry and Big 4 public accounting tax experience including becoming the highest producing asset and wealth management tax partner in the U.S. Central Market and completed a tour of duty with a Big 4 firm in Moscow Russia during privatization. He has significant experience with fund formation, international cross-border structuring, and inbound U.S. investment issues, including U.S. effectively connected income, taxation of sovereigns, and foreign investment in U.S. real property. He has built out the tax functions of two global alternative asset managers with assets in excess of $12B each putting in place compliance processes, systems, and global tax advisory capabilities. He has worked for and on U.S. regulated SEC registrants as well as large private organizations. Both his public accounting and in-house positions have given him broad exposure to back-office systems and process solutions as well as a keen understanding of cross function information and operational dependencies.

TODD VOLLMERS, SENIOR ADVISOR AND ASSOCIATE GENERAL COUNSEL, Minneapolis

Mr. Vollmers has extensive international and business experience in the private sector and in government, and previously served as an international transactional attorney with a law firm in Minneapolis, and for a private equity firm with offices in Minneapolis and Shanghai. Prior to that Todd served as a Senior Administrative Officer at the Minnesota Department of Commerce, handling priority issues for the Commerce Commissioner. Todd also worked as an attorney in the Office of General Counsel at the U.S. Department of Commerce in Washington, D.C., where he managed legal issues related to U.S. government advocacy on behalf of U.S. companies with foreign governments, and foreign trade obligations arising under the World Trade Organization (WTO) and North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). He holds a Certificate in Chinese Business Law from Fudan University Law School, Shanghai, a Master of International Policy and Practice degree focusing on International Trade and Economics from The George Washington University, Washington, D.C., a Juris Doctor from the University of Minnesota Law School, and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Minnesota.

Michael Shen, Senior Advisor, Hong Kong

Michael Koping Shen, an accomplished business leader and private investor, joined Global Access as an Advisor to our Hong Kong office. Previously, Mr. Shen served as Deputy Chief Executive Officer and Chief Financial Officer of China Taiping Insurance Holdings Company Limited (“China Taiping”), a company listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. He was also a member of the Board of Supervisors of China Taiping’s life insurance operations, and held senior management positions at China Taiping’s asset management operations in Hong Kong and Shanghai. Mr. Shen spearheaded China Taiping’s first-ever initiatives in venture capital and private equity, and was part of the core team in sourcing investment opportunities, conducting due diligence and financial/valuation analyses, and making final decisions on all investments/divestments. Investments included Baidu, Inc., AutoNavi Software Co., Ltd., and MicroPort Scientific Corporation, all of which are now publicly listed companies. Prior to joining China Taiping, Mr. Shen was an Executive Director in the Financial Institutions Group of the Investment Banking Division at Goldman Sachs (Asia) L.L.C. (“Goldman Sachs”), where he was responsible for financial institutions in the Asia (ex-Japan) region. During his seven years at Goldman Sachs in New York and Hong Kong, Mr. Shen developed in-depth knowledge in advising insurance and asset management companies on strategic, financing and operational matters. Mr. Shen received his JD with honors from Harvard Law School, where he was an Executive Editor of the Harvard Law Review. He graduated first in his class and received a B.S. degree in Foreign Service with highest honors from Georgetown University.

Martin burke, Senior advisor, new york

Mr. Burke has over 26 years of career experience as an investment banker and advisor or executive officer to specialty finance companies, with a particular focus in real estate finance. Mr. Burke is also currently the Managing Partner of Credinvest, a private equity investment vehicle used to purchase interests in operating companies in the real estate finance, subprime and non-performing credit card and consumer receivables industry. He previously served as a Managing Director of Wind River LLC, a company specializing in reselling/financing the acquisition of major oil company-owned gas stations to franchisees. He has run or founded numerous companies such as: Ultimate Sports, co-founder and managing director, a public company in the comic book business that acquired the rights from the MLB, NBA and NFL for comic books; The Credit Store - chairman and CEO, an Amex exchange-traded credit card company and one of the nation’s leading specialty finance companies; and American Home Credit, co-founder, specializing in wholesale origination in the sub-prime and non-agency mortgage industry. Mr. Burke serves as an advisor to the board of Card Acquisition, a specialty credit card company. Previously he held advisory positions at firms that include JLB Equities (liquidation of a $100M portfolio of private real estate and small business loans), Onyx Partners, and G&L Realty REIT.
 

james williams, managing director, minneapolis

Mr. Williams has a proven track record of results-oriented professionalism through cultivating strategic trading relationships between businesses spanning from Canada, Latin America, Asia-Pacific, West Africa, and United Kingdom. He has served in a variety of positions at Honeywell Inc., including, but not limited to, Senior Contracts Manager, Senior Counsel, Asia-Pacific General Counsel, and Director Business Development World Wide Airports. Over the past 16 years, Mr. Williams has served as President & CEO of Life Force Therapies, Inc., a neurological medical clinic located in Plymouth, Minnesota specializing in treating a variety of brain injuries, including, but not limited to, traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress disorder, stroke recovery, lyme disease, autism, cerebral palsy, and multiple sclerosis.

dr. nghia vu, managing director AND Advisory Board Member, hanoi

Dr. Vu leads Global Access in Vietnam and is the founder of investment bank CBV Securities. Since 2009, he has been CEO of joint venture Woori CBV Securities, an investment bank of Global Fortune 500 Company Woori Financial Group (NYSE: WF). In 2013, he was selected as an Andrew Carnegie New Leader by The Carnegie Council on Ethics in International Affairs. Dr. Vu was the lead advisor in restructuring Vietnam’s largest coffee maker. With his assistance, the company has grown from a middle market sized entity to the number one coffee maker in Vietnam with total revenue of US$1.6 billion. In addition, Dr. Vu assisted a top 10 global business group in Asia (Lotte Group) in its investments in Vietnam. He is also a leading creator of indexes in Vietnam. In 2007, he created the first Vietnam Securities Index family (combining both Vietnamese stock exchanges), Vietnam Bond Indexes, VND-Index, Vietnam Investor Confidence Indexes and many others. Dr. Vu is an alumnus of both Harvard Business School and Harvard Kennedy School, and is Deputy Head of the Accounting, Financing & Auditing Department at Vietnam National University-Hanoi School of Business.
 

bonna bang, managing director, hong kong

Mr. Bang has 15 years of equity capital markets experience in a number of roles in Hong Kong. His experience includes funding companies across China and Southeast Asia as well as in the U.S. in consumer sectors such as food and beverage, healthcare, manufacturing and media. Most recently Mr. Bang sourced the private equity financing for one of Asia’s fastest growing companies and for a healthcare services company in the U.S. He has extensive contacts with many Asia based private equity firms, hedge funds and family offices.

Amer Aboukhadra, Managing Director, Minneapolis

Mr. Aboukhadra joined Global Access as a Managing Director and Shariah Advisor as well as a member of the Shariah Supervisory Board. He oversees Shariah compliance and customer relationship management with investors from the Middle East, Arabian Gulf Region and North Africa. As a Managing Director, Mr. Aboukhadra is also responsible for raising and managing funds from the Region as well as working with the Company’s portfolio companies in the region. He has more than 20 years’ experience managing businesses in the MENA Region and as well in the U.S.
